What’s Stopping You? Really?

Yesterday’s post What If It Goes Right got me thinking more on that subject leading to today’s post. What’s stopping you living the life you want to live?

Some people say that they don’t have time to do what they have always wanted to do. So instead of focusing on what time you don’t have, how about focusing on what time you do have?:

– How can you make time to take just one small step towards what you want?

– How much time would you actually need? A year, a week, half an hour?

– What needs to happen for you to take one small step forward to the life you want to live?

Of course, there are many practicalities in life which can prevent us from moving forward to where we want to be in our lives and sometimes we are not in a position to change those things. But what can we change? However small a step it is, it would still be a change forward to where you want to be in your life. People often initially focus on what they can’t do do as opposed to what they can do.

For example, I sometimes hear people say that they’d love to publish a book but they’re not a ‘real’ writer. You don’t have to have sold as many books as JK Rowling to be a writer. The only thing you need to be a writer is to write. If you want to publish a book, what’s really stopping you? Self-publishing is relatively straight forward these days and there are countless websites offering tips and writing courses.

Or is it perhaps something bigger, more personal and completely natural such as the fear of rejection? But what if I publish it and nobody likes it? That may happen. There are no guarantees. But what if they love it? Plus you also have the satisfaction of knowing that you have created something that you are proud of and have put it out into the world.

So, what are you waiting for?

Really?

  1. Absolutely timely.. I have recently restarted asking myself.. How can I max out my 24 hours. I used to do a lot, some where, priorities changed, life became easy, and have been trying to push myself again.. Very truly spoken.. There is so much that can be done, it all depends how one manages time.

  2. Great post – it goes along with the idea of how an all-or-nothing black-and-white attitude can be really poisonous. It’s easy to look at successful people and think it was simple and quick for them – we forget they put in the work, too. Everyone has to start somewhere. (Like the actor “suddenly” making it big whose really been working for decades, or the band that comes out of “no where.”)
